Hong Kong – Middle East Business Chamber (HKMEBC) ’s Inauguration 07 Jul 2023

(Hong Kong, July 7, 2023) The Hong Kong – Middle East Business Chamber  (HKMEBC), set to play a key role in bridging HK- Middle East trade and  commerce, was inaugurated at a banquet on July 7 at the Grand Ballroom of the  Grand Hyatt Hotel with 500 guests presented.  

Along with a video address by HKSAR CE John Lee, the ceremony was  

officiated by heavy-weight personalities including His Honorable Mr. Abdullah Al  Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, UAE; The Hon Christopher Hui  Ching-yu, GBS, JP, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury; Dr. Bernard  Chan , Acting Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development; Ms. Cheong  Man Lei, Lillian, JP, Undersecretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, and  Mr. Lu Feng, Deputy Director of the Economic Department of the Liaison Office of  the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR. They joined members of district  councils, key community elites and members of the Chamber to witness  HKMEBC’s launch and the inauguration of founding president, newly appointed  execom members, advisors and chair mans of industry committees. 

CE John Lee emphasized in his address that Both Hong Kong and the Middle  

East are key links in the Belt and Road Initiative. Hong Kong’s world-class  professional services can cater to the diversified economic development of the  Middle East. He looked forward to the Chamber’s ongoing co-operation with the  SAR government in the years to come, to tell the good stories of Hong Kong – and  added to the prosperity. 

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Abdullah Al Saleh remarked, “This occasion  

marks a significant milestone in fostering economic ties between Hong Kong and  the Middle East—a region of great importance for trade, investment, and cultural  exchange. The establishment of this chamber serves as a testament to the shared  vision and commitment of all those involved. It paves the way for enhanced  collaboration, mutual understanding, and long-term partnerships between our two  dynamic regions.” 

Dr. Aaron Shum, Founding president of the Hong Kong-Middle East Economic  

and Trade Association, stated in his speech that President Xi Jinping’s visit to  the Middle East at the end of last year and CE John Lee’s visit to Saudi Arabia and  UAE in February of this year served as a testimony the endless market potential of  this region actively participating in the “Belt and Road” initiative. He believed that  despite the challenges that lie ahead and the vast expanse of desert that may need to  be crossed, the potential and returns in the Middle East will undoubtedly not  disappoint. The Middle East region is full of challenges for Hong Kong people, but 

the opportunities are truly limitless.
